Should we do sex difference science?
Sex difference science is research comparing males and females that makes biological generalizations about males and females, including inferences about the baseline range of biological capacities, vulnerabilities, or tendencies of human men and women as groups. Recent policy and advocacy work has accelerated a focus on biological sex differences from the laboratory to the clinic, generating warnings of a new era of biological sex essentialism. This talk explores the thesis that, just as in the case of scientific research on race differences, there is a need for critical discussion about the benefits and harms of such research and for ethical frameworks to guide whether and under what circumstances sex difference science should be done at all.
