Call for proposals to host a future Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences

Open to Canadian institutions members of the Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences

We are currently accepting proposals to host Congress in 2024, and expressions of interest for Congress 2025, 2026 and 2027.

Hosting Congress has many benefits. It is an unparalleled opportunity to showcase innovative and impactful research, and to unite institutions’ faculty, students, administrators and community partners around an important, campus-wide initiative. It is also a chance for universities to play a leadership role in celebrating and supporting the humanities and social sciences, and to be at the forefront of critical conversations on pressing social and racial justice issues.

The Federation is committed to equity, diversity, inclusion, and decolonization, and has committed to hosting a future, in-person Congress with a theme centred on Black Studies in Canada, anti-Black racism, and colonialism. We strongly encourage institutions to put a proposal together around this theme, and to demonstrate this commitment during all stages of conference planning.

Congress typically takes place in late May/early June over seven to eight days. The University of British Columbia (UBC) hosted Congress in 2019 and set a record with over 10,600 attendees from over 45 countries. Congress 2021, held virtually in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, attracted attendees from 72 countries. Congress 2022 was held virtually from May 12 to 20, 2022 and brought together attendees from 81 countries. York University will host Congress 2023 on its Glendon and Keele campuses in Toronto.
