The University of Prince Edward Island has seen its enrolment of students into arts programs drop 22% for this September, and registrar Kathy Kielly suggests the arts decline is part of a nationwide trend. Similarly, the University of Alberta has chosen to suspend admission into 20 arts programs due to low student enrolment, an adjustment related to its budget cuts of $84 million over the next 3 years. Maybe the humanities in Canada are not as safe as we thought.
A collaboration between the Canadian Mental Health Association BC Division and Simon Fraser University has resulted in a new resource for colleges and universities to address the issue of mental health on campus. “Designing Healthy Campus Communities” is a three-minute video explaining the latest ideas and research on why and how institutions can promote student health, wellbeing, learning, and success.
The Global Young Academy has released a call for new members, and is seeking applications from “independent researchers who combine the highest level of research excellence with a demonstrated passion for delivering impact” who are in the early years of their independent research careers. The GYA is an international organization dedicated to supporting young researchers and promoting science to a broad audience, but the call is open to research in any field, including in the humanities and social sciences – interdisciplinarity, yes please!
