23 - German Studies Canada (GSC)
The online 2022 GSC Annual Meeting (May15- 17) assembles presentations and special events on any topic or period in German Studies (literature, cinema, cultural studies, linguistics, and language pedagogy), as well as from related fields (e.g. history, art history, philosophy, political studies, diaspora and transnational studies, musicology). This year’s meeting particularly emphasizes questions of (post)colonialism and racism, potential interrelations of German and Indigenous Studies, social justice, and genocide studies. In live and simu-live sessions between 11:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST), we will explore the role of German Studies in rethinking research, teaching, and institutions to achieve transformative change and social justice.
Two keynote speakers and a film screening with director in attendance will challenge traditional thinking about German heritage, memory, and identities through input from other disciplines. Other special events include the Waterloo Centre for German Studies Canadian Book Prize lecture, a graduate student poster lounge, an event sponsored by the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) in which the Innovate German Award will be given out, and award ceremonies for the GSC PhD Dissertation Award and Best Graduate Student Paper Award, among others. Most contributions are in English, but welcomed in German and French.
