OTTAWA, September 27, 2016 — The Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences congratulates Stephen Toope on his remarkable nomination as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge.
Currently Director of the Munk School of Global Affairs at the University of Toronto, Toope was previously President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of British Columbia, from 2006-14. Former President of the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation and Board Chair of Universities Canada, he currently serves as President of the Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences.
Stephen Toope’s academic background is in human rights and international law, and he hold degrees in common law (LLB) and civil law (BCL) from McGill University (1983) as well as a PhD from Trinity College Cambridge (1987). In 2015, he was granted honourary degrees (LL.D.) from the University of Alberta and the University of British Columbia. Adding to this distinguished set of academic achievements, Toope became an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2015.
“Stephen Toope is a visionary leader with outstanding credentials and a deep commitment to people, knowledge and justice,” says Jean-Marc Mangin, Executive Director of the Federation. “Our Board and organization have benefited greatly from his guidance, and he will undoubtedly make a significant contribution at Cambridge. We are so pleased to be able to count on his stewardship through to next spring before he assumes the post in the UK in the fall of 2017.”
Toope’s appointment is subject to the approval of the university’s governing body, the Regent House, and takes effect on October 1, 2017. He is the first non-Briton to be nominated for this appointment.
