About the Scholarly Book Awards

The Scholarly Book Awards, formally the Awards to Scholarly Publications Program (ASPP), funds scholarly books in Canada that make important contributions to the humanities and social sciences. The Awards are open to Canadian scholars in the field of HSS.

For 2025 - 2026, the program will award:

  • Up to 180 Publication Grants of $8,000
  • Open Access (OA) Grants, which may be requested as part of a Publication Grant, consisting of:
    • 27 OA book grants of $8,000
    • 27 OA chapter grants of $2,000
  • Five (5) Translation Grants of $30,000 with:
    • Four (4) for English or French translation
    • One (1) dedicated to translations into Indigenous languages

Since 1941, the Awards have helped publish over 8,000 titles, championing original research that shapes Canada's intellectual and cultural landscape. In 2023, it was redeveloped with a renewed focus on EDID. Learn more.

The awards are made possible thanks to the financial support of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC).
