On May 08, the External Advisory Panel on the Creation and Dissemination of Scientific Information in French, under the Department of Canadian Heritage, released its report Research in French and Substantive Equality: An Opportunity. The Federation welcomes this report released following the extensive community consultations undertaken by the External Advisory Panel, in which the Federation participated. We welcome the report’s recommendations to strengthen governance through greater coordination, investment, and leadership on the part of the Government of Canada.
As Canada strives to advance French language knowledge creation and dissemination, it is essential that the diverse needs of all disciplines are met. To this end, we are pleased to see the External Advisory Panel’s recognition of the vital importance of the ASPP (the Federation’s Scholarly Book Awards funded through SSHRC) to supporting the dissemination of research in French. Each year, through our longstanding partnership with SSHRC, the Federation awards funding to approximately 30 French titles. Continued investment in the ASPP, including its targeted support for open access publishing, would enable greater visibility and dissemination of the research undertaken by Francophone researchers in the humanities and social sciences.
“The External Advisory Panel’s report provides a clear and comprehensive assessment of French-language research and offers concrete actions to enhance support for this cornerstone of our Canadian research ecosystem. We look forward to working with our francophone community, our members, scholarly presses, and other allies, such as Acfas, to follow-through on the recommendations.” - Karine Morin, President and CEO, Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences
The Federation looks forward to continued engagement with the federal government, SSHRC, and Canadian Heritage on French language research supports, especially within the humanities and social sciences.
