Making the most of graduate talent: Expanding WIL for PhD and master's students
Canada is home to a growing number of highly educated graduate students—but too many are leaving their programs without meaningful experience in the private sector. Despite their advanced expertise, graduate students often struggle to find roles that match their skills. This workshop explores how work-integrated learning (WIL) can help bridge the gap between graduate education and industry needs. Participants will learn about BHER’s national WIL program and how WIL models—such as industry projects, paid placements, and community-based research—can give PhD and master’s students the chance to apply their skills in real-world contexts. These experiences not only support smoother school-to-work transitions but also enhance firm-level innovation and productivity by connecting employers with untapped talent. This session is ideal for faculty, administrators, graduate students, and employers eager to better align graduate training with Canada’s evolving economy.
