Session Title:Empowering Racialized Communities: HSS-Driven Media Literacy to Combat Misinformation* This session explores a critical question: *How can we equip racialized communities with the tools to critically engage with information, resist misinformation, and reclaim narrative power in an increasingly digital world?* Grounded in Health and Social Services (HSS) approaches, the session examines how misinformation disproportionately impacts marginalized communities particularly in areas of health, public policy, and social well-being and how culturally responsive media literacy can serve as a pathway for empowerment and advocacy. Designed for educators, community leaders, youth advocates, and health and social service professionals, this session offers practical, community-centered strategies for navigating today’s complex information landscape. It is especially valuable for those working with diverse populations who seek to build trust, strengthen critical thinking, and support informed decision-making in their communities. Participants will gain insight into how misinformation spreads and takes root within racialized communities, often reinforcing systemic inequities. The session will introduce tools and frameworks for fostering culturally grounded media literacy, while also integrating trauma-informed and equity-focused approaches. Through real-world examples and applied strategies, attendees will learn how to support individuals and communities in moving beyond passive information consumption toward critical engagement, advocacy, and leadership. Ultimately, this session aims to empower participants with the knowledge and tools to challenge misinformation and promote more just, informed, and resilient communities.
