At the University of Hawaii soil scientists have been developing an archive of soils for the last 16 years to run extensive tests. For Kānaka 'Ōiwi, however, soil is spiritually significant as the organic matter it is comprised of includes the bones of our ancestors since time immemorial. It's imperative, then, that the soil be returned to strengthen our ancestral foundation and ensure the well-being of all Kānaka 'Ōiwi. How must we move forward equitably to return the soil and repair the harm while also ethically integrating Kānaka ‘Ōiwi knowledge with artificial intelligence to advance environmental justice?
