About the Federation

Who we are

The Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences is a national membership organization that promotes scholarship and leadership in the humanities and social sciences (HSS) through advocacy, capacity-building, and knowledge exchange.

We strengthen the national infrastructure that connects HSS knowledge to the places it is needed. Working with a membershipof more than 160 universities, colleges, and scholarly associations representing over 90,000 researchers and graduate students, we convene through Big Thinking summits and Canada’s leading academic gathering Congress, invest in scholarly publishing through the Scholarly Book Awards and the Canada Prizes, our national book award, and advance through fundingand advocacy community-building initiatives that elevate research and leadership across the country.

Across this work, we are committed to equity, diversity, inclusion, and decolonization, and to strengthening bilingual linguistic access, which widens whose scholarship is heard and mobilized and ensures that our programs and platforms reflect the breadth of the HSS in Canada.
