Communiqué - March

Federation News

When an international crisis strikes and the world is confronted with terrible injustice and suffering, the humanities and social sciences have a critical role to play.

That’s why, right now, our scholars are helping the world make sense of what’s happening in Ukraine, where the Russian military is continuing its unprovoked and inhumane invasion.

From analyzing the historical context of Russia’s invasion and the world’s response to Ukrainian refugees, to considering the effects of the war on food prices and Ukraine’s academic community, to sharing child-friendly explanations of the conflict and proof of our common love for animals, the work of our scholars is essential to informing the public and policymakers.

We welcome research contributions, blogs, articles and op-eds about the invasion of Ukraine or other global issues. Please reach out to communications@federationhss.ca to join the conversation.

Indigenous Content Syllabus Materials launched by the CPSA, with support from the Federation

All educators, and especially political scientists, are encouraged to incorporate the materials from the Canadian Political Science Association’s list of Indigenous content into their syllabi, graduate reading lists, and research agendas, as part of a broader effort to reflect upon, and challenge, the role that education has played in the genocides of Indigenous Peoples. Collectively disrupting, creating, and educating for gender equity

“As oppression throughout the world continues to grow and become evident at the intersections of a multitude of sidelined identities, the importance of feminist work becomes all the more significant,” write Dr. Tanya Manning-Lewis, Dr. Kathy Sanford, and Nabila Kazmi in a blog for International Women’s Day. The three UVic scholars seek to disrupt the hegemonic, heteronormative, and colonized practices that have subverted women’s voices, while providing a framework for understanding how privilege and oppression are experienced simultaneously.
