Peter Dorrington
Associate Professor, Faculty of Arts
Université de Saint-Boniface
Peter Dorrington is an associate professor of Francophone/French studies at the University of Saint Boniface (Winnipeg).
Peter has been a leader in the development of education and research in Francophone minority communities for some 20 years. In 2004, he was recruited to the Institut français, the Francophone academic unit that the University of Regina had just created in partnership with the Fransaskois community. At the Institut français, he served as founding director of the Canadian Research Center on Francophone Minority Communities (2004-09), deputy director (2006-09), and interim director (2009-12). He played a key role in the development of French-language education at the University of Regina, including the creation of the Cité universitaire francophone, the unit that succeeded the Institut français in 2015.
In 2015, Peter Dorrington was appointed Vice-President of Academic and Research at the Université de Saint-Boniface (USB). In this role, he continues to pursue the development of post-secondary education and research in Francophone minority communities, this time in Manitoba. Guided by a vision of coherent academic development, he played a key role in building academic programs, notably by establishing a true educational, community, sectoral, and governmental continuum within which the USB can develop symbiotically with its partners while exercising strong leadership.
Having completed his second and final term as vice-president in May 2025, Peter now holds the position of associate professor in the Faculty of Arts. With his experience at the forefront of minority education development, Peter's interests as a professor and researcher include leadership in Francophone minority communities, intercultural dialogue, the development of inclusive Francophone communities, and university-community relations in minority situations.
