OTTAWA, June 14, 2012 – The University of Ottawa is proud to announce that the Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences (CFHSS) has selected the University to host the Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences in 2015. More than ten thousand delegates are expected to attend.

“We are already looking ahead with great anticipation to 2015 when Congress will return to Ottawa, giving the nation’s capital a front-row seat to Canada’s most important multi-disciplinary conference,” said Graham Carr, President of the Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences. “We expect this event to be a great success given the reputation of the host university and region, not to mention the proximity to decision-makers, policy-makers and practitioners who can connect through Congress with students and researchers from across Canada and abroad who are addressing the most pressing issues of our time.”

“By hosting the Congress, the University of Ottawa is reaffirming the vital role it plays in supporting research carried out in social sciences and humanities in both official languages. We also challenge the country’s decision-makers to take part in the lively Congress discussions and hope they will use their new-found knowledge to better the lives of those in the community, the country and even the world,” said Mona Nemer, vice-president, research at the University of Ottawa.

Congress, which is the largest multidisciplinary academic gathering in Canada, brings together scholars, students, practitioners and policy-makers from Canada and around the world to share knowledge and innovative research. Discussions centre on issues related to a broad spectrum of disciplines in the humanities and social sciences, including literature, geography, theatre, sociology, education, digital humanities and population studies.

As one of Canada’s leading research institutes, the University of Ottawa has received nearly $10 million this year from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) to support over 200 research projects. The University campus boasts state-of-the-art meeting and multi-purpose rooms and, with its new up-and-coming Social Sciences Tower, provides a stunning yet practical setting for all attendees. Moreover, since it is located in Canada’s capital and just steps away from where policy decisions are made on Parliament Hill, the University of Ottawa is an ideal host for the Congress.
