Melanie Griffith Brice, PhD, is Michif and the proud mother of three amazing adult daughters and grandmother to three beautiful granddaughters.  She is a citizen of the Métis Nation-Saskatchewan and was born in Meadow Lake and raised at Jackfish Lake, Saskatchewan, Lac des Prairie, kayahte ochi wiya ekwa L’brossar Sâkahikan. On her Métis side of the family, her relations include Morin, Ridsdale, Delaronde, Sansregret, Desjarlais, Beauregard, Ross îtisiyihkasoyiwak î-wahkômâkanak from Northern Saskatchewan, Batoche and Red River Métis settlements.

Dr. Griffith Brice is proud to be a graduate of the Saskatchewan Urban Native Teacher Education Program (SUNTEP) in Saskatoon, where she learned how to become a Métis educator. She started her career with the Greater Saskatoon Catholic School Division as a classroom teacher and teacher-librarian. She had the privilege to return to SUNTEP as faculty and then later worked as the Director of Curriculum in the First Nations, Métis & Inuit Education Division with the Ministry of Education in Alberta. 

She completed her Master’s in Education at the University of Saskatchewan, focusing on Métis Teacher Identity, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Education at the University of Alberta, focusing on Indigenous children’s literacy. Dr. Griffith Brice was the inaugural Gabriel Dumont Research Chair in Michif/Métis Education in the Faculty of Education at the University of Regina. 

Currently, she is an Associate Professor at Werklund School of Education, University of Calgary. Her research areas include Michif/Métis ways of knowing and learning, Indigenous language revitalization, and Language & Literacy learning and teaching.
