Government supports critical role of social sciences and humanities research in innovation
June 6, 2011 - Ottawa, Canada - The Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences welcomes the federal government's investments in innovation, education and training in today's budget. Investments in university and college research recognize the tangible contributions that all disciplines make to Canadian's health, environment and economic prosperity.
The 2011 Federal Budget provides an additional $37 million to the three federal research granting agencies-including an increase of $7 million for the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council.
Further, the government is establishing 10 new Canada Excellence Research Chairs, including those in fields relevant to Canada's digital economy.
These moves coupled with support for the indirect costs of research, a Canada-India Research Centre of Excellence, for strengthening research links between colleges, universities and businesses, and for increased student enrolment in key disciplines related to the digital economy will substantially boost Canada's capacity for research and innovation.
