Brain Smoothies as Knowledge Mobilization: How Art-Based Meditations Promote Student Well-Being
There is a wealth of knowledge on the relationship of art and mental experience; and yet, art-making is relatively ignored in the field of psychology as an intervention worthy of empirical attention. In this presentation, I will summarize published psychometric evidence that the art-making process can trigger a perceivable mental shift into healthy mental states, and that this can be used for experiential learning to builds mental health capacity. I will unpack the latest research on my novel method using art-based exercises that provide a mental rest, foster focus, and energize the mind. The presentation includes findings from a study with preservice teachers revealing benefits for student well-being and mental resilience. Through this, I reveal how art-based pedagogy is a promising practice for wellness education. Participants will discover a unique way to mobilize knowledge in practice and leave with their own understanding of the relationship between art, brain, and mind.
