Can Systems-Thinking help us overcome the AI hype in education?
In a world where Breakthrough-Thinking (fail fast) brought us the advent of Large Language Models (LLMs), and Design-Thinking (jobs to be done) is shaping how users get to experience those AI/LLM breakthroughs, how do we factor in human learning? Are there new methods to help shape the next wave of innovations in education outside of commercially driven frameworks? In this talk, we get to explore Systems-Thinking as a framework to visualize the impact of new education initiatives on the communities they serve. We will start by describing the current state of the EdTech industry (or how we got here), followed by a definition of the Systems-Thinking framework and its benefits, and finishing with a workshop-style setting where we get to talk about the Systems-Thinking framework through the lens of a specific project. The work and examples provided through the presentation are supported by 10+ years of experience working on learning and user experience design projects for Canadian clients in academia and not-for-profit organizations. The end goal is to create a new language around the way we describe innovation and its impact on education models.
