Yashasvini Rajeswar knew from her first year at IIT Madras in India that she wanted to pursue a research opportunity in Canada. “I had previously travelled to Canada. I fell in love with the country and knew that I had to return eventually. I learned about the Mitacs Globalink Research Internship in my first year and had heard stories about it from older classmates and friends.”

Yashasvini’s degree is in development studies, so she researches topics such as globalization, gender studies and urban development. After applying for the internship, she was matched with Dr. Roy Amore in the University of Windsor’s political science department.

Their research project explores the intersection of religion and politics on a global scale. Although Yashasvini’s research focuses mainly on Hindu nationalism in India, the project’s global scope means she’s learning about the political climate in places like China, the United States and her host country.

The social sciences immersion has been a considerable asset for Yashasvini. “My home university consists mainly of science and engineering students. This has its benefits, but it has been great for me to spend time at a university with such a strong social sciences background.”

The internship experience has also given Yashasvini a new perspective on her future plans: “I’d like to work in my field to gain some practical experience before I pursue a PhD. I hadn’t considered Canada for that, but the department has been great to me. After being here, I feel good about my future plans.”
